The CPC (Certified Professional Coder) test is a critical step in obtaining CPC certification. CPC certification is a golden standard for physician-based medical coding and is well known worldwide in healthcare.

To become certified, you must pass an exam that tests your knowledge on how to code procedures and diagnoses.

ᐉ what is the CPC

What Is CPC Certification?

The CPC test is a medical coding competency test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions that assess 17 knowledge areas. Most questions present coding scenarios to test the proper application of CPT ® Procedure Code, HCPCS Level II Supply Code, and ICD-10-CM Diagnostic Code. During the test, you will be referred to the approved coding book CPT® Professional Edition of the AMA and the selected ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II Code Manual. You must complete the CPC exam within 4 hours and answer 70% of the questions correctly before you can pass.

CPC certification is a credential awarded by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). This credential is recognized throughout the world as a mark of excellence in medical coding.

CPC (Certified Professional Coder) testing is the final step in obtaining CPC certification, and is known as the gold standard for physician-based medical coding. By passing the CPC exam and gaining the right to add CPC abbreviations to your name, you become a healthcare professional recognized as a stable master of professional medical coding.

Who should take the CPC exam?

After receiving AAPC training to become a medical coder, or if you have significant medical coding experience, you should have the opportunity to enroll in a CPC test to obtain certification. If you pass the CPC exam, you can earn more than $25,000 more than the annual salary of a person without AAPC's medical coding certification. And CPC salaries, which averaged $58,055 in 2022, will maintain an annual increase of 6%. In addition, the demand for certified medical coders continues to grow.

Why is the employer looking for CPC credentials?

Accuracy of medical coding is key to optimal ethical redemption, which integrates medical coders into the financial resources of all healthcare institutions that provide care and services to patients. For more than 30 years, the CPC has established a solid reputation for excellence. Therefore, the title of Certified Professional Coder comes with high expectations, trust, and respect.

If you pass the CPC exam, it clearly shows the employer that you own:

Expertise in the allocation of accurate medical codes for diagnoses, procedures and services performed by physicians and other qualified healthcare providers in hospitals and specialized cost coding related to facility setup (e.g. inpatient hospitals)
Sound knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations to meet compliance requirements such as setting medical needs, using appropriate modifiers, and complying with bundled rules
Proficiency in a wide range of services including E/M, anesthesia, surgery, radiology, pathology and medicine
Understand clinical documents and code technicians through a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
Understand how medical coding and payment policy changes can be incorporated into the reimbursement process of care
