What Is CPC Certification?
The CPC test is a medical coding competency test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions that assess 17 knowledge areas. Most questions present coding scenarios to test the proper application of CPT ® Procedure Code, HCPCS Level II Supply Code, and ICD-10-CM Diagnostic Code. During the test, you will be referred to the approved coding book CPT® Professional Edition of the AMA and the selected ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II Code Manual. You must complete the CPC exam within 4 hours and answer 70% of the questions correctly before you can pass.
CPC certification is a credential awarded by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). This credential is recognized throughout the world as a mark of excellence in medical coding.

After receiving AAPC training to become a medical coder, or if you have significant medical coding experience, you should have the opportunity to enroll in a CPC test to obtain certification. If you pass the CPC exam, you can earn more than $25,000 more than the annual salary of a person without AAPC's medical coding certification. AAPC also provides an opportunity to take the CPC exam electronically, as it recognizes the difficulty of moving to a physical location for CPC exam takers.
The CPC electronic test consists of a four-hour test supervised by Examination®. After purchasing or transferring your current exam voucher, you will receive instructions via email on how to schedule your exam through Meazure Learning®.
On the day of the test session, connect with the supervisor via Examination to complete the security check and take the test. Results and research areas will be published within 7 to 10 business days from the date of completion of the test.
